The UK Green Building Council (UK GBC) is to venture into training and education with its new Sustainability Training and Education Programme (STEP).

The first two courses will be an introduction to sustainable development, suitable for all professionals across the built environment and a leadership programme, aimed at senior decision makers within the sector. The courses will start next year.

The announcement comes following independent market research which showed two-thirds of the industry believed current provision for sustainability training and education could be better.

Paul King, Chief Executive of the UK Green Building Council said: “Training, education and ongoing learning is vital in any sector, particularly in such tough economic times. However, the unstoppable momentum behind sustainability is creating an unmet need in the construction and property industry.

“We simply do not have the full set of skills and knowledge necessary for the UK to compete in the green economy of the future. We look forward to working with a range of partners and are convinced that STEP will help the industry address the sustainability challenge.”

The UK GBC is currently looking for learning providers to partner with in order to deliver the programme. The window for submissions is 3 September to the 2 October.
