Requirements for connectivity in buildings are likely to rise across Europe as a consequence of current political and economic uncertainty, a study by property consultant Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL) suggests.
In the short term at least, JLL says, the 'technological richness' of buildings will become more important as cost cutting and security reduce international travel and increase videoconferencing following the events of 11 September.

It also notes discussions on longer- term effects such as a preference for multi-site locations, although JLL says it is too early to tell if this will 'cause a step change in the market'.

Meanwhile, many occupiers are deferring decisions: 'Viewings are down and instances of withdrawal from negotiations have occurred,' the report states. JLL anticipates gross leasing across Europe in 2001 to be 30 to 40 per cent down on 2000.

The report suggests more generally that the perception of safety will affect the ability of businesses to attract and retain staff.
