As a Gillingham FC fan and a housing professional I've been reading the debate around MHS Homes' sponsorship of my team with interest (23 April, page 9).

As a fan, I welcome the cash injection into the club but initially I did have my doubts about a registered social landlord spending such a large amount on publicity.

However, on reflection, it could be a master stroke. Not only has MHS received considerable publicity in recent weeks, but I suspect a wider strategic goal.

The Gills' chairman, Paul Scally, has been looking into the possibility of acquiring a site in the Medway Towns for a new stadium. His preferred site would incorporate a ground plus commercial developments and housing.

The current ground would then be developed for housing as well, with up to 275 homes. There would undoubtedly be an element of affordable housing. A partnership and trust has already been created and MHS Homes would be in a prime position to benefit by acquiring some or all of the new homes rather than participating in the scramble for them with other RSLs.

Of course, this is all speculation.

PS Haven't local authorities sponsored football teams in the past without such a debate? Sandwell and West Bromich Albion? Wirral and Tranmere Rovers?
