The Welsh Assembly needs to urgently revamp its housing strategy to deal with the shortage of affordable homes, the Chartered Institute of Housing said this week.

Launching the paper Action on Housing in Wales at its annual conference on Tuesday, CIH Cymru set out a raft of measures to increase supply. Average house prices in Wales are rising by £2000 a month.

“The time is now right to review and renew Better Homes for People [the Welsh assembly’s national housing strategy published in 2001],” says the document.

“CIH Cymru believes this can be achieved through a national housing action plan that sets out specific targets on supply and housing quality across all sectors, backed out by clarity on resources, responsibility, timescale and how the plan will be delivered.”

The paper calls for a “Barker-type review” of housing supply followed by new targets for completions.
