BP Amoco's Grangemouth petrochemicals complex and First Hydro's Ffestiniog power station in North Wales are now safe in the knowledge that early warnings will sound if substation plant failure is imminent.
This safety will be provided by permanently installed versions of EA Technology's partial discharge monitoring systems. EA's equipment provides continuous non-invasive detection and location of insulation faults in high voltage switchgear.

The equipment operates automatically as a continuous early warning system, enabling operators to pinpoint potential sources of failure and ensure the ongoing safety and reliability of the switchgear.

The systems use the transient earth voltage technique and can discriminate between partial discharges caused by potential equipment failures and background discharge from plant such as motors.

Both systems are designed to monitor and store data for remote interrogation.
