Electrical contractors may face increased costs and possible fines for improper disposal of fluorescent lamps.

Since 16 July fluorescent lamps that contain mercury have been classed as hazardous waste under the European Landfill Directive. Contractors have a duty of care to dispose of them at a designated landfill site or arrange for their recycling.
