Quintain director Nick Shattock said: “There is great potential for new leisure facilities, homes, offices and shops. The London Plan has already identified Wembley as an opportunity area and we look forward to turning this potential into reality.”
The London Plan, published in June, outlined London mayor Ken Livingstone’s vision for the capital for the next decade.
In the plan Livingstone called for 23,000 homes to be built each year to redress the housebuilding shortfall of the past 20 years.
Architect the Richard Rogers Partnership is working on a master plan for the Wembley site, but no planning application is expected before the end of the year. Lord Rogers said: “Our thinking for this site will be very much in line with the vision set out in the mayor’s London Plan and latest government policy on brownfield redevelopment.”
Current government policy is that 60% of new houses should be built on brownfield land.
The London Development Agency, which is responsible to Livingstone, welcomed the deal.
