Stortech Electronics has supplied security cameras which have been successfully installed on 550 buses to deter vandalism and violence, estimated to cost Travel West Midlands around £1 million per year.
The miniature colour cameras, which have wide angle lenses, have been fitted under dome covers on the ceilings of both single decker and double-decker buses.
Stortech was also required to design a customised power supply to provide the smooth 12v output required by the cameras. Typically around three to four cameras have been connected to a duplex multiplexer that rapidly scans between the cameras. This enables one or four images to be viewed on the screen at any one time. Drivers monitor the screens via a small liquid crystal display in the cab. After three days of capturing recorded events, tapes are removed and stored in the event of being required by police.
