The recent introduction of the Control of Vibration at Work Regulations in July 2005 could prompt a surge of legal claims from employees, says solicitor Vizards Wyeth.

Businesses across UK industry could be affected as workers seek compensation for injuries such as White Finger Syndrome, caused by the vibration of mechanical tools. Typical claims could be upwards of £3000.

The regulations impose additional duties on employers to protect operatives who may be exposed to vibration – in particular, Hand-Arm Vibration and Whole Body Vibration.

Currently, 300 000 workers have reported symptoms of hand-arm vibration. Many more are expected to follow suit as awareness grows.
