It’s about time that Newcastle had a facelift and constructed a regeneration template for other regions to emulate (“Newcastle plans to make its West End a ‘housing showcase’”, HT 14 January, page 11).
If the proposal for 300 new homes and the refurbishment of 150 in the West End of Newcastle does materialise, this will improve the social and economic situation of the community greatly.
Although it may be too early to assess the overall pros of the scheme – such as reducing the slums, ghettos and crime in the area – it will undoubtedly have a positive effect on the neighbourhood. However, showing graphic designs and raising peoples hopes is no use if, in the end, nothing is done.
