White Young Green has been drafted in to assess the environmental impact of Metronet Rail’s maintenance work on the London Underground.

Over the next 12 to 18 months, WYG will identify potential environmental problems in Metronet’s property portfolio, which includes Tube stations, depots and 30 commercial properties, WYG has put a team of 12 engineers and scientists for the job, led by Derek Hair, associate director of WYG Environmental. He said: “We will look at the condition of the ground from both historical and current viewpoints. For example, we will investigate whether the Tube runs through areas of contaminated land.”

The assessment will also look at factors such as flora, fauna, archaeology, noise and energy.

Preliminary work on the project has begun with inductions, training and safety guidance for the team. The next step will be an initial assessment, due for completion at the end of the year.
