Tenants of Carlisle and North Hertfordshire councils have voted in favour of transferring their homes to housing associations.
Carlisle tenants voted “yes” by a 52% margin on a turnout of 67.5%. Councillor Ray Bloxham called this “a close result”. Riverside Group subsidiary Carlisle Housing Association will take over the council’s 7500 homes and plans a £52m investment programme.

In North Hertfordshire, a 70% turnout voted 60% in favour of transferring 8700 homes to New Hertfordshire Homes. The registered social landlord will spend around £50m on improvements during the next five years.

Both transfers will now be referred for approval to deputy prime minister John Prescott.
