Welcome to the new-LOOK Construction Manager, the only magazine dedicated to those at the sharp end of creating and maintaining the built environment. As you'll see, we've substantially improved the look and feel of the magazine because those in construction management are a large and important community in one of Britain's largest industries and you deserve the best.

We've also sharpened the focus of our content. What's in the new CM? In Prelims you'll find news updates, designed to help you follow trends in the industry and keep track of what's new at the Chartered Institute of Building.

Next, through fresh and informative features, the Project section explores all aspects of running projects, including legal, people management, marketing, information technology, and health and safety. This month we examine what the Renaissance writer Machiavelli had to say about modern construction.

The new Material section explores building materials from the construction manager's point of view. We focus on buildability, cost versus performance and programme-friendly innovations. This month we explore why no-polish vinyl was the clear choice for Bovis Lend Lease in a PFI hospital job.

Finally, the Career section. Because the CIOB is all about professional achievement we're pleased to expand this section to reflect the importance of career concerns. As well as a bigger job opportunity section, we investigate career prospects, compare career paths and discuss the lifestyle issues that go with construction management. Turn to page 48 for a frank look at working away from home and to page 56 for the perils of drinking with the boss.

As the magazine of the CIOB, CM attempts to fill a gap in the construction press by focusing on you, your project and your career. With your continued feedback we'll keep improving.
