Perth & Kinross council is to set aside housing for older people in a bid to stop “lifestyle clashes”.

The scheme, which will come into effect on 1 April, would give older people priority for housing in certain circumstances in a bid to avoid disputes such as rows over loud music.

The council will decide, on a case-by-case basis, whether homes that become available in blocks predominately housing elderly people should be “sensitively let”.

Gordon Hunter, convener of the council’s housing and health committee, said: “If there’s a clash of lifestyles, it’s not fair on either a young family or elderly people if you put one on top of the other. If, for example, there are four older couples in a block and one home becomes available, we will consider not letting it to a younger family.”

Hunter added that each case would have to be approved by Communities Scotland.

The policy would also ensure young people got “more appropriate housing”, he said.
