Two schoolboys, Brendan Quinn and Enda Young, from Maghera in Northern Ireland have won the prestigious title of Young Engineers for Britain 2001, beating 28 other finalists.
The 18 year-olds scooped the award after designing a self-sustained induction deferrer (SID), which is an automatic pod that scares off birds sitting on power lines by using power from the line to propel itself up and down the cable.

The Young Engineers for Britain award aims to strengthen links between education and industry by encouraging young people to undertake engineering project work. It is open to anyone aged 11 to 25 in full time education, trainees or apprentices.

The winners share a prize of £2500, and their school will also receive £2500 to spend on engineering equipment.
