The annual Site Equipment Demonstration Exhibition took place at Fen Farm in Milton Keynes last month.Global Telematics had its Orchid tracking system on show at stand 106. The system has been used for three years in the fleet industry, but has been exposed to the construction industry for the last six months. The Orchid is a tracking system that uses satellite technology to follow plant equipment. A tracking device can be covertly fitted to the required vehicle. Global then designates a zone as small as 5m around the vehicle; if it is moved out of that zone, you are alerted. Global can keep track of the equipment for you, or you can monitor it yourself through an internet site or PC-based software. Consultation starts from £20 per month and is suitable for any size company with any number of vehicles. In the fleet industry, the system was used to cut insurance premiums by up to 30%. Stand 72 saw the launch of two new ranges from Integrated Hydraulics. The company has added two series of flow dividers designed for high-pressure applications. The valves are much shorter than previous ones to allow for more compact installation. It has also released a new valve cartridge that controls the rate of pressure decay, reducing noise and damage to parts and so increasing system lifespan.SkyKing Equipment launched its 229TJ long-reach access platform vehicle on stand 311, avenue O. It has a working height of 22.2m and a maximum outreach of more than 13m. Other features include a telescopic boom, jerk-free controls which allow the basket to be rotated through 180o and hydraulic stabiliser legs which enable quick equalisation of the chassis on sloping ground. Other new vehicles on show at the SkyKing stand included a 19m Pantel articulated boom and the IDL 110 Ex from the Iteco scissors range, which has a working height of 13m. On stand 4C, avenue O, Genie had a new range of rough-terrain, self-propelled scissor lifts to view. The GS-4390 and GS-5390 both have a 680kg load capacity, two-speed lift functions, troubleshooting diagnostics, two self-closing entry gates, a descent alarm and a tilt sensor with alarm. The rear platform can be removed for easier loading and unloading, and a slide-out engine tray allows easy access to parts. The GS-4390 has a 14.9m working height and the GS-5390 an 18m one. Nifty Lift launched the 170, new to its trailer-mounted access range, on stand 416C, avenue M. It has a working height of 17.10m, an outreach of 8.70m and a platform capacity of 200kg. Scaffolding systems manufacturer Layher demonstrated its scaffolding calculator software on stand 16C, avenue O. It enables you to fit scaffolding around a scanned picture of your building virtually, so erection can be planned in more detail.Bobcat had the world’s first demonstration of its new T190 compact tracked loader at stand 181, avenue L. The T190 is a smaller version of the 894, with 320mm rubber tracks providing a firm grip on the earth and low ground pressure. Other new machines included a range of mini excavators from 1.5 to 5.5 tonnes and the T40170 Telehandler, which has a maximum lift height of 17m and can lift up to four tonnes. In avenue H, stand 68, Rovacabin showed off its Power Safe generator unit. Produced in partnership with Generator Power, it is highly secure, with a low risk of fuel leakage. The generator is housed in a heavy cabin fastened by a large double lock. Access doors for the plant can only be opened from the inside. Any fuel leakage is contained inside the cabin, and the fuel is pumped upwards from the 400-gallon tank, so that even if the fuel line is cut only a small amount of leakage is possible. Costs start at £160 per week to hire or £9050 to buy. The unit is customisable and fully insured against vandalism and theft. Also at the showground, B-Trac Equipment had the TerraFire rubber-tyred trencher on exhibit for the first time and the new Evacutator vacuum system at stand 506, avenue R. King Trailers has its largest-ever display on stand 290 avenue N, including a new low-height slopebed trailer.GreenMech had a new wood chipper on display at stand 740, avenue J. The ChipMaster TC220MT55 was designed for access to difficult and small areas. It has a 270mm capacity chipper, twin hydraulic feed rollers, a disc-blade system and a ground clearance of 400mm. Its tracking speed is up to 4km per hour. The disc-blade system, unique to GreenMech, allows the TC220MT55 to process small amounts of contaminated material with minimal damage and operate at a reduced noise level, with an increased blade life of up to 600%. At BL-Pegson’s stand 705, avenue U, the 428 Trakpactor made its UK debut. Designed for efficient and cost-effective processing of quarried rock, it processes demolition and recyclable materials at a rate of 250 tonnes per hour. Also new from Pegson is its 1000 Maxtrak, an addition to its tracked crusher range. It has a metal detection system to reduce the chance of stray bits of metal entering the crusher. It also includes dust suppression sprays to reduce emissions. Powered by a Caterpillar engine, the 1000 Maxtrak can be used as a primary, secondary or tertiary crusher, depending on material feed sizes and the products required. On stand 702, avenue U, Powerscreen International had its new mobile screening machine on view. The Powertrack 600 is the smallest in its range, with an output of up to 400 tonnes per hour. Once on site, it can be fully operational in less than five minutes.
