More funds and tougher powers are needed to help London’s boroughs tackle antisocial behaviour, the Association of London Government has warned.
The lobby group launched a report on Monday calling for new measures to combat graffiti and flyposting.
Philip Portwood, chair of the ALG’s transport and environment committee, said boroughs’ ability to tackle nuisance was being undermined by funding shortages.
He said: “The spending review only provided a 0.6% increase in funds for environmental schemes next year. We are committed to making London safer and cleaner but this shouldn’t be achieved by councils having to short-change other services.”
Councils should be able to keep money from fines to improve the environment, the ALG said.
