AMEC has won a £36 million project by Railtrack to refurbish Waterloo station.
The appointment follows a comprehensive front-end study to identify a number of alternative designs, using valve engineering, life-cycle costing and quantitative risk analysis Working in partnership, the companies will replace the train shed roof, covering 19 platforms. It includes 28 000 m2 of roof coverings, glazing maintenance gantries, steel support structure and access walkways, together with the replacement of glazed cladding on the north, west and south elevations.

Engineering services comprising new platform lighting, public address, voice alarm, cctv, lighting protection and power distribution will also be undertaken. Completion is planned for 2003.

The design, developed jointly by AMEC and Frankham Associates, is intended to provide an asset life of 75 y, with no major overhaul being required during the first 25 y. Disruption to travellers will be kept to a minimum.
