These awards are open to individuals involved in the installation of CCTV, access control, alarms or a combination of these. They are most suitable for third year apprentices, but may also be appropriate for particularly outstanding second year candidates.
The awards were launched successfully in 2001, with presentations at the BSIA Annual Lunch. Open only to apprentices from BSIA companies in the first year, the awards scheme is now being extended to all companies certified for their installation activities by a UKAS accredited body.
’Source of concern’
BSIA Chief Executive David Fletcher comments: ‘The growing sophistication of technology, coupled with an increasingly demanding customer base, mean that effective training of installers has never been more important.
‘On leaving apprenticeship, installation engineers need to have excellent technical knowledge, coupled with very good customer interface skills and general enthusiasm for their role.
These awards highlight what can be achieved by apprentice installers
‘It has been a source of concern to the BSIA that take-up of structured training for apprentices has been patchy and we are actively seeking both to improve qualification content and accessibility, and to promote what is available. These awards highlight what can be achieved by apprentice installers when their abilities are combined with the right kind of thorough training.’
The BSIA is pleased to announce that Pyronix Ltd has agreed to sponsor the event this year. Pyronix MD Julie Kenny says: ‘We are very much aware that all links in the supply chain must be strong in order to ensure customer satisfaction and strengthen sector performance, and in this the role of the engineer is fundamental.
‘We have consistently provided support to the training co-operatives in order to assist apprentice engineers, and are very pleased to be involved in this important BSIA awards initiative.’
