The Group has played a key part in the development of new colour codes for wiring cables, in order that they are harmonised with other European countries. The new cable colours were introduced in April 2004 and become mandatory in April 2006. They have caused consternation among some electrical contractors.
The standard for low voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies, IEC 60439-1, provides for the use of symbols on terminals to which cables are being connected. The same symbols must be used in the assembly’s wiring diagrams/drawings. Therefore, a marking code using alphanumeric references fulfills the criteria.
The notation for power circuits is L1, L2, L3, N. This is well recognised and has been retained. To avoid conflict between an assembly’s internal power conductors and the external wiring colour coding being used, ESPG recommends that internal power conductors should also be a common colour, except for the green/yellow used for earth bonding.
To assist with the specification of electrical equipment, the Group has updated its relevant guides covering type tested and partially type tested assemblies forms of separation. The guide on low voltage busbar trunking systems has also been revised. These are available to purchase from the Group. For copies e-mail: cac@beama.org.uk or call Carole Cook on 020 7793 3013.
