Costain hired for construction, testing and commissioning of the Northern Relief Main

Work includes the construction of a 13km pipeline and associated provision of access roads, drainage and pipe work connecting the pipeline to the supply network. Traditionally chocks and pallets are considered as waste on sites and sent for disposal either to transfer stations or in some cases to landfill. The project identified the materials as unnecessary waste and wanted to find an alternative to waste disposal to eliminate the impact on the environment and save costs associated with waste disposal.

Key points

• Working with the supplier to identify alternative working practices that are beneficial to all parties and the environment.
• Increased awareness of the principles of the waste management hierarchy, that is the elimination of waste stream and re-use of materials.
