The government claims it will make a £100bn investment in wind power over 12 years (26 June, www.building.co.uk).

And just where will the money come from? The Treasury’s coffers? The tax payer? Private investment? I seriously think not.

The government wants to encourage homeowners to generate energy and sell it back to the grid. I can just see my electricity providers rubbing their hands with glee at the thought of paying me to do that … and, of course, there will be a very simple, streamlined approval process in order for me to do my small bit for sustainability.

Forgive my cynicism, but we’ve heard it all before. Unless the government comes up with realistic, affordable proposals that can be implemented in a simple manner, we will be sitting here in 10 years reading yet another newsbite on the latest sustainability initiative and forgetting about the dozens that have gone before, all of which have been abject failures.
