I wrote on 12 August that the competition brief for the £60,000 house contest was prescriptive.

It appears that the typical Buckinghamshire small town – which was the design parameter – consists of barrel vaults and monopitched roofs with orange and red cladding panels. So where is the 30% stone, 30% render and red brick? Why provide a competition brief which is neither followed by the competitors, nor the judges, nor even the critics?

I am pleased that Trevor Beattie, English Partnerships’ corporate strategy director, has said that the “work put in would not be wasted”. I look forward to our team receiving instructions to proceed with a real job!
