I was intrigued by the “head to head” with the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), but noted a few matters that weren’t addressed (16 March).

I joined the RICS as a student more than 40 years ago and attained my fellowship in 1988. Having specialised in dispute resolution, I found I was drifting away from actual construction. I joined the CIOB in 2001, to fill the gap in my experience and meet professionals in other disciplines.

The CIOB is the only chartered institution that represents all professionals in the construction industry. Other bodies, such as the RIBA or the Institution of Civil engineers, represent particular professions or, in the case of the RICS, the entire scope of “property”. It is only the CIOB that brings together all construction professionals.
