As a woman involved in and passionate about a career in construction, I read with interest the article regarding the construction industry being “no place for women” (10 June, page 28).

Previously an office receptionist, I was one of many female recruits who signed up for the first phase of contractor Thomas Vale’s Women in Construction initiative in 2004 and have not looked back. It gave me the opportunity to get involved in the industry and broaden my skills. I have completed my NVQ Level 2 in fitted interiors and have secured a full-time job as a plumber. All of my colleagues on site are supportive, accepting and treat me as part of the team.

The process of educating women in the opportunities available in construction is an important one. In my experience the construction site really can be a woman-friendly zone and we must begin to promote this. I would urge female counterparts to find out more. In an industry crying out for more skilled labour, women are an untapped source of excellence.

There are many women out there like myself, who place more importance on career prospects than the state of their nails. We don’t mind getting our hands dirty and have a great deal to offer. The construction industry cannot afford to ignore us.
