As I read Tom Potbury’s article about age discrimination (16 September) I must confess to a wry smile.

Of course Tom is right but we have been here before. It is nearly 10 years since the Disability Discrimination Act’s rules on employment came into effect and it has not yet been fully adopted by employers. I am sure that a similar result would appear from a survey into other anti-discrimination legislation. Although there are some employers who assist staff with a disability even beyond the requirements of the act, there are many who either do not know or do not understand their duties. Age is easier to identify than disability but I remain sceptical that a large proportion of employers will recognise their responsibilities and change their practices to comply – they have not done so for other “discrimination” legislation so why start now?
