A number of people have used your letters page to advocate a name change for the QS.
The reason put forward is the need for a professional title that reflects the tasks undertaken by QSs. This, in my opinion, is misguided. In a world where the role of the QS is diverse and ever-changing it would be difficult to find a suitable catch-all title. If one could be found and agreed upon it will soon be rendered out of date by changes that are likely to take place in the future.

By way of comparison there is no evidence that architects, engineers or solicitors are looking for a new professional title, despite changes in their roles.

What is required is an institute that promotes the skills currently on offer by QSs to those who are in need of these skills. As the RICS is clearly failing in this respect, there is an obvious need for a new body to represent the QS.
