BBC London’s recent exposé on fire safety risks at social housing blocks doesn’t come as much of a surprise. Across the UK’s social housing sector, awareness and understanding of the requirements of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2006 (RRFSO) is worryingly low

Indeed, informed estimates indicate that about 40% of “responsible people” (as defined by the order) are unaware of their obligations.

As an industry, there is a real need to raise awareness of RRFSO, not just as a piece of legislation, but as an approach that, ultimately, can help save lives. Furthermore, we need to eradicate the belief that “it won’t happen to me” and encourage organisations to take responsibility for their legal duties.
