On a recent visit to Northern Ireland, I was amazed by how easy it was to acquire a CSCS card there compared with mainland Britain.

To get a black card, one simply attends a half-day health and safety course and then an interview to assess competence. The entire process takes less than a day and costs less than £400.

I will be recommending that my colleagues travel to Northern Ireland to gain their cards – there’s a significant saving in time and cost.
