Reliance Secure Task Management has signed a four-year contract with the West Mercia constabulary to provide a team of Custody Assistants.
The contract will entail 49 Assistants and two managers being deployed to operate across the Herefordshire, Shropshire, Worcestershire, Telford and Wrekin areas and monitor prisoners on a round-the-clock basis.
In practice, the Reliance Custody Assistants will carry out administrative tasks as well as prisoner care, and provide constant watch over prisoners. They will also complete tasks once the sole preserve of operational constables, allowing the latter to resume their street patrolling duties.
The 49 Custody Assistants proposed are equal to 53 police officers being released for operational duties.
