Consulting engineers Faber Maunsell and architect Hugh Broughton are again working on a competition design for a research station in Antarctica, this time for India.

The design comprises a series of GRP monocoque structured modules, each of which provide 65 m2 of internal space. Unlike some other research bases, the Indian station will be founded on rock. The site is subject to fierce katabatic winds flowing off the arctic plateau. The intention is to use this energy to power specially designed, robust wind turbines. PV arrays incorporated within the GRP envelope and solar thermal panels will also be employed to provide additional electrical and water heating capacity in summer.

The same team previously won the competition to design a station for the British Antarctic Survey.
