UK electricity prices may be set for a rise with three major generating companies on shaky ground.
Powergen is mothballing a quarter of its generating capacity; British Energy has yet to announce a recovery plan; and TXU Europe is currently looking for a way out of financial problems.
According to market analysis organisation EIC, the key element in possible price rises is Powergen's cutback in capacity. As soon as the company made the announcement, wholesale electricity prices rose 2%.
