Women working within construction will now be able to communicate with other women across the sector via a new social networking site.

The Women in Construction Action Network site was launched by Salford’s Centre for Construction Innovation, and was funded by the government initiative ConstructionSkills.

The site enables users to network with other women, and the centre hopes that it will encourage women to share their experiences of working in a traditionally male-dominated sector.

Dr Lisa Worrall, co manager and leader of the project, said: “Women are severely under represented in the construction industry - our latest research has shown that there is a high demand for more communication channels between them.”

At present, women make up around 10-12% of the construction workforce. Around 80 women have signed up to the new site in the first few weeks.
