The wing-shaped system at Wessex Water's headquarters does a lot more than light the offices. It incorporates movement detectors, an announcement system and improves the building's acoustics
Limited headroom was a problem at Wessex Water's headquarters near Bath, completed last July. The specially cast concrete ceiling panels feature m-shaped recessed sections to increase the feeling of space within the building. The concrete had to remain exposed so that its thermal mass would help to regulate the temperature of the building and the services also had to be accommodated within the concrete panels without visual intrusion. Zumtobel Staff Lighting designed the bespoke light fittings, which incorporate light and movement detectors as well as an announcement system. Acoustic "wings" are attached to the light fittings to improve the acoustic performance of the building.
