Kier is hard on the heels of the Dutch-owned contractor, but the December lull is apparent across the board.
HBG has held on to first place in the contractors' monthly league table for December 2001 with wins worth £33.3m.

The Dutch-owned firm picked up five contracts, the largest of which was an £18m office and retail scheme in Edinburgh for Gyle Developments.

Kier moved from fourth to second with 10 contract wins worth £31.5m; Skanska claimed third with two contracts worth £27.4m. The pre-Christmas lull is evident, with the number of contracts and their values well down on October's and November's figures.

Bovis Lend Lease and Sir Robert McAlpine continue to dominate the contractors' yearly table, as do English Partnerships and Building Design Partnership in the clients' and architects' tables respectively.

How the tables work

To qualify for the tables, companies must have been identified on two or more projects fitting the criteria below in the past 12 months. Projects must:
  • be of precisely calculated or confirmed value
  • have reached the main contract stage

  • be in the UK.
Residential, civil engineering or overseas contracts are excluded. Student accommodation is included.
