Building services provider Colt International has developed a smoke extraction system that allows a greater escape distance from apartment doors to staircases in residential blocks.

Part B of the Building Regulations stipulates that the maximum distance from a flat’s door to an escape stair is 7.5m.

Colt says its Extended Corridor Solution increases this to 18m. This means fewer escape staircases are needed in buildings with long corridors and developers gain more usable space. The system provides an extraction unit at one end of the corridor and a dedicated air inlet at the other end, which clears corridors of smoke quickly.
