Morgan Professional Services (MPS) is to design a £71.4 million composite wing assembly facility in Broughton, Flintshire, for leading aircraft manufacturer Airbus.

The 52,300 sq m North Factory, will be built by MPS sister company Morgan Ashurst and will be used to assemble carbon fibre wings for Airbus.

MPS is designing the entire building, providing the architectural, civil and structural engineering design and the concept design for the mechanical and electrical services.

The facility will comprise a steel-frame structure in a three-bay configuration: two outer bays with column-free spans of 83 m and a central bay with a 35 m clear span.

The design incorporates a 40,200 sq m assembly area floorplate with high specification concrete floors and machine bases supported on approximately 8,000 piles. The facility will include an extensive overhead craning system for the movement of materials, components and fully assembled wing structures.

The facility is due to be completed in 2010.
