Steve Smith tells Eleanor Snow about a housing aid centre boss who believed in teamwork
What was the job
Housing adviser in a housing aid centre.
Who was the boss?
John Mitchelson. He also promoted me and managed me when I was homelessness manager in the centre.
Any bad memories?
I can’t remember any bad experiences, which just shows what the passage of time does for you. However, there was a Christmas party when we argued over the size of the coffee cups and the charge – it seemed really important at the time.
And good ones?
He was always good to us after our Friday lunchtime team meeting in the local hostelry. I am sure the 2pm return deadline was not always adhered to, but it was good to be able to discuss cases and ensure teamwork was at the top of the agenda to ease us nicely in to the weekend.
What did he teach you?
John taught me the value of allowing staff to get on and do things. I may have got lots wrong, but he would always back me up. The learning experience from getting things wrong, rather than being taught, was invaluable. He also managed to teach me the art of appreciating real ale, something I have been able to keep with me and use at appropriate times in my career.

Would you do the same?
I have tried to do the same – you probably need to ask my staff now if they feel I let them take a lead but am there for support.
So he’s your mentor?
Yes, John was a good mentor. His advice has certainly been well used over the years.
How has he changed the way you behave now?
I like to think I have his relaxed attitude. I certainly have his commitment to providing a good customer-focused service – I hope that the tenants feel the same.
Is there anything you would like to say to him now?
Yes. John, if you’re reading this, when you are next in the Southampton area, please give me a call and we’ll share a real ale or two.
