The ECA has welcomed proposals to reform secondary school education with a stronger emphasis on skill-based training.
In a Green Paper published on 12 February, the government proposed that skills-based GCSEs will lead to vocational A-levels, and then degrees. Some will be taught partly out of school, in particular those with a manufacturing, engineering and applied business bias.
The reform follows concerns over the disparity between academic and vocational qualifications. David Pollock, ECA director comments: "For too long there has been a misjudged emphasis on academic qualifications to the detriment of the range of skills necessary to sustain the country's economic development."
