Royal Liverpool Hospital will be rebuilt as part of scheme that will also see overhaul of Merseycare NHS Trust buildings and Alder Hey children’s hospital.

The Royal Liverpool Hospital is to be rebuilt as part of a £1 billion scheme to improve healthcare in the area.

Half of the budget for the scheme will go to the new hospital; the remainder will be spent projects at the Alder Hey children’s hospital, Merseycare NHS Trust and Aintree University Hospital in Fazakerley.

Although the total number of beds – approximately 930 – will remain unchanged, the new hospital will have a larger X-ray and outpatient department, and a higher capacity for high-dependency patients.
