Architect Wells McKereth’s scheme for a £2m restaurant at Smithfield Market, London, has started on site.

The three-storey building, to be called Smith’s, is due for completion in November.

A project source said the ground floor would be designed like an extension of the meat market. “It will have a huge bar, asphalt floors and be very stripped back, with lounge areas serving light food.”

It will be linked by a lift to the first floor, which will feature a cocktail bar and private dining areas. The second floor will feature the main dining room. The most exclusive restaurant will be housed in a new glazed structure on the roof of the building.

A triple-height, brick vault at basement level will house a 1500 m2 nightclub called Fabric designed by FCP with interior architect Forward Architecture.

The nightclub designers were selected after competitive interviews with a shortlist of architects that included FAT and Sedgely Place.
