Engineer Whitbybird has won a competition to build a bridge crossing the River Lea.
Due to open in 2006, the bridge will be constructed across the Thames from the Millennium Dome, and will link the isolated Leamouth Peninsula to Canning Town. The design includes a 25 m mast that tilts to allow boats to pass. The bridge will also have an aluminium deck, sculptural staircases, LED lighting and crushed-glass lightboxes. The competition was led by Leaside Regeneration with a judging panel that included architects Piers Gough, Lord Rogers and Alex Lifschutz.
