Tenders are invited for 65,000-seat mega-venue

Abu Dhabi has invited bids to build a mega sports stadium, which will hold over 65,000 people and have a rectractable roof. The stadium’s developer Mubadala invited tenders to build the stadium earlier this week. Bidders need a minimum annual turnover of 4.5bn dirhams (around £740m) and they have until 12 December to submit preliminary bids.

The new stadium will dwarf what is currently the city’s largest stadium, Zayed Sport City, which has a capacity of around 45,000 and will next month host the FIFA World Club Cup football tournament.

The news of the super stadium follows recent reports that, over the next three years, Abu Dhabi is planning to invest 5.5bn dirhams (around £900m) in infrastructure projects in line with a predicted 3m surge in population by 2020.
