Redevelopment is planned for the research institute at Pirbright, source of the 2007 foot and mouth outbreak

Pirbright, the government's main institute of research into animal health, is to receive a £100m redevelopment funded by the government.

Facilities at the Surrey complex will be upgraded and modernised to enable Pirbright to attract the cream of the world's animal scientists.

Although details of the construction programme for the redevelopment remain unknown, whichever contractor gets the job will need to be extremely careful.

Pirbright was where the foot and mouth outbreak of 2007 originated, reportedly from contaminated soil on the wheels of a builder's van.
