Contract is first won under the infrastructure giant’s new country structure

Contractor Balfour Beatty has won a £76.5m transport job in Melbourne, Australia.

The firm said the NetworX Alliance team, which includes both Balfour Beatty’s rail division and its professional services business Parsons Brinckerhoff, had been awarded the contract to remove a pivotal railway level crossing by Victoria’s roads authority, VicRoads.

It is the first Australian contract secured under Balfour Beatty’s new country model structure.

The project will involve lowering the existing rail line beneath the road in order to reduce congestion and improve safety. A new station with transport interchange and associated precinct areas will be constructed as part of the project.

Balfour Beatty chief executive, Andrew McNaughton, said the contract demonstrated the success of the firm’s strategy to develop in growth geographies and market sectors.

Guy Templeton, country manager for Australia, said; “This highlights the effective combination of the design skills of Parsons Brinckerhoff working together with project delivery expertise of our global rail business. We look forward to developing this strategy further within the Australian and New Zealand markets.”
