Contractor Bam Construction has been appointed to build the £23m Materials Innovation Factory in Liverpool.

The facility for the University of Liverpool includes 11,600m2 of space over its four stories and has been designed to reach an “excellent” rating under the BREEAM sustainability standard.

It is due to complete in July 2016 following a start on site in November this year.

The sustainable design features low energy mechanical and electrical services.

Bam will do a large amount of construction off site and has also committed to use its “smart waste system” on the build to reduce site waste.

Ged Flanagan, construction director at Bam Construction, said it was “an exciting project with a high technical specification”.

Anthony Mulhearn, project manager at The University of Liverpool, added: “This contemporary building clearly reflects our aspirations and provides the ideal environment to further our relationships with industry partners”.
