Barking Riverside announces a housing design competition for first phase of regeneration

Barking Riverside, the joint venture company of regeneration agency English Partnerships and housebuilder Bellway, has announced a new competition to find designers for the first phase of regeneration on the UK’s largest brownfield site.

The competition will invite designers to prove they are the best candidate to overcome the challenges of creating a sustainable community which provides affordable family homes and facilities.

The winning team will work alongside Barking Riverside on the project which will include 1,200 sq ft of mixed use retail space, over 2,000 sq ft of residential space and 1,100 sq ft of health facilities.

The entries will be judged by a Design Advisory Panel which has been newly created. The panel will take on the responsibility of choosing the winning team. It will then work with it in a series of workshops to ensure that all designs are of the highest quality.

Director at Barking Riverside Duncan Innes said: “This competition will ensure we achieve the highest design standards in the delivery of Barking Riverside and is a fantastic opportunity for designers to become involved in the regeneration of the UK’s largest brownfield site.

“In addition to this, our decision to appoint a panel of independent experts to advise on this process demonstrates our commitment to ensuring the very highest quality of design. Both these steps will help us to deliver a development which provides affordable family homes and facilities, and reduces carbon emissions”
