£200m sporting complex pins hopes on "super-casino".

Birmingham City Football Club has unveiled plans for its new stadium complex in Saltley. The club hopes to build the state-of-the-art arena alongside a "super-casino", and is dependent on an investment from the casino developers to make the £200m complex financially viable.

Club chief executive Karren Brady said: "we can regenerate and we can build a facility that is iconic. People will travel to our region and get involved in a wider sporting village."

The club faces a rival bid to build a casino in the region from the NEC. Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell is due to specify areas in England, Wales and Scotland for a "super-casino" in 2007.
