Contractor Bovis Lend Lease has been forced to pay out a total of £12,632 after one of its subcontractors sustained an injury on a site in Leeds.

The 38-year-old employee shattered his ankle after he fell from an unguarded platform on the Bridgewater Place construction site.

A prosecution was then brought by the Health and Safety Executive and Bovis was fined £5000 plus costs of £7632.

Following the case, the HSE warned construction companies to improve protection for employees and subcontractors working at height.

HSE inspector Sarah Hague said: “This case shows all too clearly how anyone working at height is at serious risk of injury if proper precautions are not observed and rigorous inspections are not carried out.”
