Work on city centre site due to finish in 2029

Pensions giant Royal London has appointed Bowmer & Kirkland as main contractor for the transformation of its Thistle Street offices in Edinburgh into a new Scottish headquarters.

The scheme by local practice Morgan architects was given planning last November and will see B&K overhaul and extend the existing buildings at 1 Thistle Street and 2 Queen Street in the middle of the city.

The value of the job has not been disclosed but the completed 108,000sq ft development will provide Royal London with a workplace for up to 1,600 employees. Plans include a new auditorium, employee café, dedicated collaboration areas, two roof terraces and extensive cycle parking and changing facilities.

The work will reuse around 70% of the existing buildings

Royal London chief operating officer Peter Josse said: “We have deliberately chosen to transform and reuse the existing buildings rather than simply replace them.

“The result will be a high-quality modern workplace that respects the character of this important city-centre location while providing an environment designed around how our people will work and collaborate in the future.”

Work is due to start imminently and scheduled to complete in 2029.

Others working on the scheme include QS and project manager Thomas & Adamson, M&E consultant Wallace Whittle and structural engineer Woolgar Hunter. Development manager is Drum Real Estate.
